Veterans II
In this week’s radio column I’m continuing my series on veterans’ issues. One of the reasons that Veterans Affairs is changing the way that it delivers service is because of the changing demographics of our veterans. Of the 210,000 people who currently have files with Veterans Affairs, around 43,000 are from the World War II Korean era, and about 77,000 are modern day vets – People like my brother that I mentioned last week. These younger vets generally don’t have the same needs for programs that help vets with day-to-day chores; but newer programming, like the Veterans Affairs’ Canada operational stress clinics, are in high demand. And it’s for those reasons that the government is changing its focus. More mental health services; more one-on-one contact and more points of service; these changes are helping to deal with the changing needs of Canada’s vets.
