Canada is home to millions who have fled (or are the descendants of those who fled) Communist oppression. That’s why I was pleased to hear the Conservative government is supporting a Canadian memorial to commemorate the victims of Communism.
Once completed, this memorial will remind future generations how more than 100 million men, women and children lost their lives, and millions more suffered inhumane conditions at the hands of Communist regimes.
It will also serve as a reminder to all Canadians that glorifying Communist symbols insults the memory of these victims, and that we must never take for granted our core values of freedom, democracy, human rights and the rule of law.
History needs to be remembered so that lessons can be learned. For many Canadians communism is a horrible part of their families past that should not be forgotten.

New legislative amendments will be introduced this fall to better protect children from a range of offences, including child pornography, while ensuring that offenders receive tougher sentences.
Proposed amendments to federal legislation will increase penalties for offenders who commit sexual offences against children, especially those who violate the conditions included in probation orders, prohibition orders and peace bonds. Our legislation will also ensure that at sentencing, judges take into account each young life that has been devastated by a predator. This can be accomplished, for example, by ending sentence discounts for multiple sexual offences committed against children.
This policy is part of a broad range of actions the Conservative Government has taken since 2006 to protect our communities from child sex offenders, including punishing offenders to the full extent of the law.
While it is true that the number one priority of this autumn’s Throne Speech will be economic, the strengthening of our justice system will remain a top Conservative priority.

As part of the Conservative government’s justice initiatives, “Wanted by the CBSA” was introduced in July of 2011. This Canadian Borders Services Agency program publicizes wanted individuals. “Wanted by the CBSA” has proven to be effective in locating individuals who are in Canada hiding illegally.
People get placed on this list after Canada-wide warrants for their arrest and orders for their deportation have been issued.
The successful location of almost 40 percent of the cases posted on the Wanted by the CBSA list demonstrates the program’s usefulness, and the level of public interest in protecting our borders.
This program is an excellent example of how ongoing cooperation between the public and law enforcement (domestic and international) can contribute to safer communities.
Our border guards work hard protecting Canada and anything that can help them do their job keeping Canada safe is worth supporting.
