Merchant Navy Veterans Day

September 24th, 2012

Earlier this summer, you probably missed hearing that September 3rd is Merchant Navy Veterans Day, the day we honour the Merchant Navy.

Sometimes overlooked, Canada’s Merchant Navy played a critical role both overseas and closer to home during the First and Second World Wars.

Our Merchant Navy frequently navigated the deadly waters of the North Atlantic between North America and Britain in order to deliver essential materials needed to help secure victory in both world wars.

Of the 12,000 brave men and women who served in Canada’s Merchant Navy during the Second World War, 1,629 gave their lives.

The Merchant Navy is a part of our history that we need to remember. Please take some time to learn about what these Canadians did for you and me.

Importance of All Regions in Canada

September 17th, 2012

During this fall’s Parliamentary session, the economy will be front and center. The government will be doing all it can to make sure all regions of Canada grow economically.  But some politicians are saying that Canada`s economy is unbalanced and growth in one region hurts other parts of the country.

Thomas Mulcair`s NDP is blaming Ontario’s economic problems on higher commodity prices for oil and potash. Basically, the NDP believe that since Saskatchewan and Alberta are doing well, Ontario is suffering.

It’s silly and divisive to say that one region’s gain is another region’s loss.  When the Trudeau Liberals tried the National Energy Program in the 80’s, they left deep divisions; they destroyed the West’s economy and did nothing to help the country.

Mulcair and his New Democrats would be wise to remember this and stop their veiled attacks on the West.
