Federal Funding for a Stadium

September 27th, 2010

I sometimes wonder how many news commentators read the news before they comment on it.  I say this because I heard a few talking heads announcing that the federal government is going to fund a new hockey stadium in Quebec.

What Prime Minister Harper did say in Saskatoon recently is: If the federal government decides to provide funding for new sports stadiums, we are going to be fair to all parts of the country.  Quebec will not be favoured over Saskatchewan or vice-versa.

At this point, no decision has been made about federal funding for either a dome in Regina or a hockey coliseum for Quebec.  A national program for sports stadiums is likely to cost billions of taxpayers’ dollars. This is a decision that should not be taken lightly.

Canada’s Immigration and Refugee System

September 21st, 2010

One of the main issues that Parliament will be dealing with this fall is how to prevent Canada’s immigration and refugee system from being exploited by unscrupulous individuals.

Human smuggling is a despicable crime. Any attempts to abuse the generosity of Canadians for financial gain are totally unacceptable.

While too many Canadians it seems like a no brainer to crack down on human smuggling operations, like the ship that landed in B.C. this summer, not everyone is so supportive.

One Liberal official compared our determination to crackdown on human smuggling to the Nazi’s treatment of the Jews. He seemed to think that refusing anyone who wanted to come to Canada was wrong.

The only way that Canada can continue to be a true refuge for those who need our protection is to get tough with those who abuse our hospitality.  Canadian immigration policy needs to be tough if it’s going to be fair.
