Canada is Taking the Lead in Helping Haiti

January 25th, 2010

Even though the earthquake in Haiti is an immense tragedy, one can be proud of what Canada is doing to relieve the suffering in that country.

The Canadian Forces Disaster Assistance Response Team has been sent to Haiti.

We now have approximately 2,000 men and women, seven helicopters and two ships contributing to the rescue and recovery efforts.

To date nearly 1,000 Canadians have been brought safely back from Haiti.

And the federal government is matching dollar for dollar Canadians’ charitable contributions to disaster assistance for Haiti. This is in addition to the preliminary contribution of $5 million announced immediately after the earthquake.

Canada is taking the lead in helping Haitian people; we are doing what we can to help them.  It is only right that a nation as blessed as ours use its resources to aid those who need our help in times of crisis.

New Year’s Resolutions for Canada

January 11th, 2010

Since this is my first newspaper column of the New Year, I thought I would suggest some New Year’s Resolutions for growing Canada’s prosperity. Just to let you know, I will be sharing these ideas with the Prime Minister.

First, resolve to go on a diet by cutting some of the fat out of the federal budget. Every government department knows there are areas where it can save dollars. Bureaucrats should keep in mind that every dollar Ottawa spends is another dollar that will be taxed from your pocket.

Second, resolve to exercise. Exercise restraint on regulation. Nothing kills jobs or the dreams of entrepreneurs as quickly as red tape.

Finally, resolve to be open, open to more foreign investment and to negotiating trade agreements all over the world.  Because of our access to the U.S. market, many countries are making Canada a top priority when pursuing trade agreements.

These are three simple resolutions that, if kept, will create prosperity for years to come.

Happy New Year.
