Canada Abstains from UNGA Vote on Jerusalem

Canada abstained from voting on a UN resolution declaring “null and void” President Donald Trump’s decision to recognize Jerusalem as Israel’s capital. The UN General Assembly voted 128 to 9, with 35 abstentions including Canada.

· The United Nations has no authority to declare “null and void” the policies of a sovereign nation on issues such as the location of an embassy.

· It is shameful that the Liberal government did not support Israel and the United States, two of our country’s most important allies, and instead chose to curry favour within the United Nations.

· Under Justin Trudeau, Canada is abandoning our international friends and aligning itself with UN member states that in some cases have been hostile to Israel’s right to exist.
